Expert Course in Sleep Disorders and Craniomandibular Dysfunction

This expert course, lasting one year and worth 16 ECTS credits (400 hours), is a professional course that aims to train the dentist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep-related breathing disorders and craniomandibular dysfunction, allowing the professional to be competent in the interrelation with other areas of health and in participating in interdisciplinary clinical teams.

It is also a useful training for obtaining the Expert Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine for dentists and stomatologists awarded by the Spanish Federation of Sleep Medicine Societies (FESMES) and by the Spanish Society of Dental Sleep Medicine (SEMDeS). ).

The clinical activity will be carried out attending to patients who come to the Dental Hospital of the University of Barcelona, with treatment needs for sleep breathing disorders and craniomandibular dysfunction, on Tuesdays or Wednesdays (it will be one day a week), from 3:00 p.m. 30h to 20:30h.

The course has theoretical activity that will be intensive at the aforementioned time throughout the month of September (in which there will be no clinical activity) and subsequently seminars will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the classroom throughout the rest of the course. academic year the same days of clinical assistance, which will be prepared and presented partly by the teachers and partly by the students.

 

General Information

Duration: The duration of the course is 1 calendar year / 1 academic year. The start date is September 3, 2024 and ends on July 30, 2025.

Total credits of the master's degree: 16 ECTS credits (400 hours: 250 contact hours, 50 hours of directed work -seminars- and 100 hours of autonomous work)

Mode: face-to-face

Assessment: Attendance at all course activities is mandatory. The evaluation is continuous and ends with the presentation of a clinical case.

Languages of instruction: Spanish and Catalan

Registration fee

Academic year: €4,500

NOTE: An increase of 10% is applied to the amount, up to a maximum of €70, as an administrative fee. Registration must be done at the beginning of the academic year, being essential to continue taking the postgraduate course.

Admission Criteria

The course is aimed at graduates in dentistry or graduates in medicine specialized in stomatology.

The selection of candidates is made based on the curriculum and the following items are assessed: university where the degree was completed, academic record, work experience, participation in humanitarian activities (dentists without borders or similar), training in craniomandibular dysfunction and disorders sleep respiratory conditions, level of English and others such as, for example, wanting to do the thesis. Once the resumes have been analyzed, an interview is carried out with the pre-selected candidates. It is not essential to have prior specific training in dental sleep medicine and craniomandibular dysfunction.

  • Be competent in taking the medical history, diagnosing, establishing the prognosis, and treating craniomandibular dysfunction.
  • Be competent in the history, examination, complementary tests and diagnosis of the patient with obstructive sleep apnea
  • Be competent in performing treatments with mandibular advancement devices
  • Be competent in the interaction with the dental prosthesis laboratory professional, both through the prescription and through dialogue in the prescription of intraoral devices

To achieve the objectives of the course, the teaching plan is structured in a program of two modules by carrying out different teaching activities:
  • Expository classes (more intensively throughout September)
  • *Theoretical-practical workshops:
    • temporomandibular and upper airway examination
    • interpretation of complementary tests (polygraph records, imaging tests)
    • taking analog and digital records for the preparation of the mandibular advancement device
  • Study, presentation and discussion of cases
  • Clinical practices with patients who come to the Dental Hospital of the University of Barcelona with treatment needs in these disciplines
